Our History

The Church of the Holy Presence has a short, but valuable history. In 1991 Saint Barnabas in downtown DeLand commissioned two ordained deacons to begin a mission church. This church was to provide a more charismatic expression of faith within the Anglican communion of the Episcopal Church. The Mission began meeting at the YMCA and was eventually able to purchase the property on Kepler Road establishing itself as a self supporting parish in 1996. Through the years, many people have experienced the power and presence of God through this community. It is our hope that by embracing prayer, scripture, worship, fellowship, and mission the Church of the Holy Presence will become a beacon of light and life to the city of DeLand. We have begun a new season of ministry and wait with great expectation to see the work God has in store for us all. We would be honored to have you visit us and we look forward to sharing the love of Christ with you.

What is Anglicanism?

Over the last 450 years, The Anglican Church has spread to all parts of the world through its missionary zeal. There are nearly 70 million members of the Anglican family in 164 countries.   Anglican Churches uphold and proclaim the catholic and Apostolic faith (holding earnestly the Faith for all time, in all places, and for all people in the continuation of the Apostle’s teaching and fellowship).

Many people often ask, what is Anglican theology?  The best answer to this question can be found through our prayers.  As Anglicans, we pray what we believe.  Therefore it is often said that the faith, order, and practice of the Anglican Church is found in its expression through the Book of Common Prayer.  Scripture, tradition, and reason are the threads that weave our worship as we come together in community to glorify God.

The worship styles within the Anglican Community may vary from simple to elaborate or traditional to charismatic.  Here at Holy Presence, we understand God to be Lord of it all and hope to offer a balance of expression that will challenge all of us out of our comfort zones, while focusing not so much on styles of expression as much as the mission and purpose of the Church.  We would love to have you join us in this venture and in this new season of ministry.

A Word from Fr. Brian:

What an exciting couple of years we have had here at Holy Presence. I trust that God is going to continue to lead us along His paths for His Glory.

A picture of BG and Susan As Christians we often wonder where God is going to lead us in the future. After all there is much hope and excitement knowing something great and mighty is around the corner. However, I have found that the best way to know what God is calling us towards in the future is to be faithful with where he has led us today. If we are not faithful with what God has already entrusted to us, why do we think that tomorrow will be any different? As each of us seeks to serve God in our families, at our jobs, with our neighbors, and in our daily routines of life, we will experience the power and presence of God working in us and through us. When this happens our lives and fellowship with one another will become a witness to the city of DeLand, and people all around us will know we are Christians by our love. A healthy church community will have this characteristic among its members and can rest assured that it is walking in the right direction, along God’s path.

I hope and pray as the years unfold that we will be this type of church and that the Holy Presence of God will touch people’s lives through this community of faith. Thank you in advance for sharing your lives with us and each other. We are all walking through this journey together and we need each other’s help, support, and encouragement to be all that God has intended for us to be. May we truly become the arms of God to a lost and dying world.
